Women Aloud - When Did Your Bedroom Last Get Some Action?

I was delighted to be featured on the Women Aloud blog this week with my top tips to declutter and reorganise your bedroom.

Whoa, calm those minds of yours, I’m talking about decluttering action!

When was the last time you gave your bedroom some serious sorting attention? If, like me, your bedroom has become a dumping ground for kids toys, clothes that don’t fit and washing baskets that never stay empty…well, join me in taking action, let’s get our bedrooms clear of clutter! Thankfully we have the perfect person on hand to help us, Tracy Ross from Blissfully Organised, who is going to share her top tips for decluttering your bedroom. Over to you Tracy…

Top tips for decluttering and organising your bedroom

The bedroom is one of the most private rooms in our home and ideally it should be your peaceful sanctuary. However, it can easily become chaotic if there is too much furniture, clothing and displaced items from other rooms. Here are my simple steps to make sure your bedroom is the calm, relaxing space that you need to switch off from a busy day and get a good night’s sleep.

Step 1: review your furniture and layout

The first step is to review all the storage that you have in your bedroom. A clear space with the right layout will create a more relaxing environment. Selecting the right storage and organising your storage space will help to save you time and allow you to store the things that you need effectively.

The amount of furniture will depend on the size of the room and number of family members sharing the space. But in general, less is more. Too much furniture can make a room feel much smaller and attract more clutter. You may have inherited a piece of furniture which you love but doesn’t work for your needs or you may have fallen in love with a vintage piece of furniture and are now trying to make it work for you. Good storage is key to an uncluttered look. It will allow you to have key items on display and but store everything else in an ordered fashion, out of view.

When reviewing your furniture and room layout, ask yourself the following questions?

Can you easily move around the room?
Does the storage in this room meet your requirements?
Can you easily find the things that you need?
Is the room layout making the most of the space that you have?

Step 2: declutter your drawers, cupboards and wardrobes

Once you have reviewed the furniture and layout of the room you can start to declutter the drawers, cupboards and wardrobes. I find asking yourself the following questions a useful guideline as you work through your decluttering:

Do I love it?
Do I wear it?
Do I need it?

When I work with a client to declutter their clothing I find the following order works well:

Drawers: socks/tights, underwear, nightwear, sports clothing, knitwear, t-shirts
Shoes: gather all your shoes together (under the bed, in the wardrobe and elsewhere)
Accessories: hats, scarves, belts, jewellery and bags

Wardrobes: after opening your wardrobe doors and before you take everything out ask yourself the following questions:

Do you have too many of the same item i.e. 10 pairs of black trousers?
Is your wardrobe mostly fast fashion or classic items?
How do you spend your time i.e. work and leisure?
Can you pull together 5 outfits in three minutes?

Now take everything out of the wardrobe. You need to go through your wardrobe ruthlessly and be very honest with yourself when deciding what to do with each item. You are going to create three piles – keep, donate and sell.

You should be thinking of getting rid of the following items:

Items that no longer fit
Items that you haven’t worn in a year
Good quality items that you’ve never worn but still have labels
Outdated items (except special vintage pieces)

Step 3: organise your clothes and accessories

Once you have finished decluttering you can start to think about how best to reorganise the items that you are keeping. Decide what you need to hang and what should be folded in drawers. Clear out any old dry cleaning hangers. Do you need to replace hangers? Group similar items together i.e. underwear, socks etc. Some of my clients like to add dividers into the drawers to make it easier to find the items that they need.

You can group items in your wardrobe in one of the following ways:

Sort by category – trousers, tops, dresses, coats etc.
Sort by colour – light to dark
Sort by usage – work clothes, smart casual clothes, evening/special items. You may identify gaps in your wardrobe which will help you stay focused on purchasing the items that you need and avoid you buying similar items that are already in your wardrobe.
Shoes: create a shoe rack to store footwear
Store out of season items in vacuum bags

Step 4: move on to any other areas where you keep your belongings

Bedside tables: bedside tables can easily become cluttered with medications, reading materials, beauty products, etc. Start by removing any items that don’t belong here. Review the items in your bedside drawers. Keep one of each item that you need i.e. book, hand cream, alarm, etc.
Under the bed: unless you have built in storage under your bed, this area can easily become cluttered with things that you don’t know where to store or want to be out of sight.

Before you pull everything out, ask yourself the following questions:

Do you know what’s under your bed?
Are the items stored in random bags or ordered in sealed storage boxes?
Now take everything out. Purge unwanted items and return displaced items to the correct space in your home. If you really need to use store items under your bed, group similar items together and store in sealed boxes to avoid dust.

If you currently use your bedroom as a home office, consider relocating this elsewhere in your home. You don’t want a constant reminder of work when you are trying to sleep.

Step 5: Keeping things clutter-free

Follow this simple routine to help create a calm, relaxing, uncluttered space:

Every morning make your bed and open the curtains or blinds
At the end of the day hang up your clothes or put into the laundry
Once a week review any items that have appeared in the bedroom and return to the correct room.

  • I first met Tracy in 2019. I live overseas and wanted to help my Mother clear a downstairs room to become a bedroom, I needed a gentle, trusted professional to complete the task after I had returned to my home. We all met and agreed upon a plan, but it was not to be as my Mother’s health deteriorated very quickly and she passed away. Although I did return to the UK a few times that year, decluttering wasn’t a priority. Then Covid put an end to my being able to return. Finally, in spring of this year, flight restrictions were lifted and I saw an opportunity to return to the UK, now faced with the task of clearing the family home. I contacted Tracy and thankfully, despite short notice, she had some free days to help me. We arranged 6 days throughout my 2 1/2 weeks to help me stay on track and motivated. Tracy helped me stay focussed and helped me believe we could achieve a fairly daunting task of going through a lifetime of memories, papers, photos and possessions. I had to be very disciplined about what was kept as whatever I chose to keep was to be shipped back to my Country. Tracy gave me time to tell a story about an item and why it made the “keeper”, or “think about it” pile, yet didn’t break stride in her work whilst listening. It was a very cathartic process. I felt like I was talking to a long time friend. She has a talent for putting you at ease, and for helping you see objects with a critical eye. Not once did I feel she was making the decision, more that she helped me verbalize my attachment, or not, and that really builds a bond of trust. After each session, I had “homework” to complete before we met again and a follow up email charting the successes of the day and the plan for the next session. As I was on my own during my stay in my family home, this could have been rather lonely, but knowing that Tracy was coming, both broke up the monotony of going through endless boxes and kept me on task such that the job was successfully completed.

  • Tracy has helped me many times over the years, and I think I must have known her for 10 years now! When I first contacted her I had reservations about letting someone into my home, making judgments and telling me what I should do. But Tracy's service is NOT like that at all. She did a full home audit and we chatted about what I hoped to achieve. For years I'd been frustrated by our storage area, a large room under the house which was hard to access and full of things we hadn't seen for years. We agreed to tackle it and Tracy suggested that to start with, we took everything out. I thought she was completely mad at this point. Three hours later we had done just that, assessed what was there, got rid of some of it, sorted some and made plans for the rest. It was like a massive weight had lifted from my shoulders. After that she helped me organise rooms, and filter through boxes of stuff. More recently she helped me prepare for a big move. It's always an absolute pleasure to see Tracy and she is very thoughtful in her approach. Her service is life changing and I am very grateful that I contacted Tracy all those years ago. Contact her now, you honestly won't regret it.

  • Tracy is amazing. We were renovating our house and finally was able to plan some extra storage. Tracy helped us to plan out new fitted wardrobes and then came back a few months later to help me get into a system with my laundry ( one of the things as a family I find hard to keep under control! ). She is kind, non judgemental, motivational & inspirational! I would say most people could do with a bit of Blissfully Organised in their lives!

  • Tracy helped my young girls and I declutter before a house move. In particular I was impressed with how Tracy got on well with the girls (7 yrs and 3 yrs) straight away and explained the sorting process simply. This has had a lastly impact on my children, getting them to appreciate you can’t keep everything!! I too enjoyed spending focused time with Tracy looking at my wardrobe. I will definitely be implementing the learnings for my clothes purchases such as reducing my tendency to buy some items in too many colour ways! Thank you Tracy for all your help. Jo
